Rome is built in layers: ancient stone, medieval courtyards, baroque facades, and traffic that keeps it all in the present. Inside the Pantheon, light falls through the dome in a single circle. A few streets away it's scooters and coffee.
Go out early, while the city is still putting itself together: shutters, delivery vans, the first scooters. In Rome you don't visit history. You live around it.
